Volunteers are the heart and soul of our ministry.

Compassionate, friendly, skilled, fun, hard working: these are some of the words used to describe the women and men who give generously of their time and talent.  Without them, we simply would not be able to continue to provide services to our neighbours.

Our volunteers share: Why I volunteer …

“Seeing people work in a team, a joy in helping others.”

Volunteers work in a team environment and are encouraged to mentor and support one another to learn and develop.  Folks come from the local neighbourhood and from churches and communities across Winnipeg and beyond.

“I wanted to help serve the people of my community.”

Volunteerism is not only essential to our day-to-day operations, as we only have one full-time employee, fostering leaders through volunteering is a core part of our programming. We empower members of the local community by creating volunteer opportunities that suit their interests, abilities. Some of these local community volunteers are newcomers to Canada who need to develop language skills and attain Canadian experience so they can move into paid employment. Others, approximately 75%, are on Disability Allowance. Many experience mental illnesses such as depression, have an addiction or suffer the residues of trauma making it difficult for them to pursue volunteer opportunities elsewhere. Others are making the first steps towards recovery, developing self-confidence in a supported environment with goals to further education or employment. They all find it meaningful to give back to a place that makes such a significant impact on their own community.

“I belong … and I am learning how to clean.”

Volunteers receive training and support for the work that they undertake.  Financial support is available to get certification, for example, the Food Handlers Certificate and First Aid Responder.  Periodic training on topics like Conflict, Mental Health, Addictions, Listening Skills and Crisis Intervention is offered.  Some of these programs are co-offered with partners, such as other 1JustCity ministries.  The contribution of volunteers is recognized through a Volunteer Appreciation and Recognition program.

Some of our volunteers on disability benefits are able to earn credits toward extra money.  Contact us to learn more about this option.
